General Director Andrey Scherbak

It is my great pleasure to inform you that the 5th International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians will take place in Kurashiki City from August 30 until September 14, 2003.

The people of Kurashiki have tirelessly worked at the continuing development of Kurashiki as a cultural, industrial, and tourist center. Kurashiki is truly a city blessed with many rich city resources. With its traditional Japanese-style streets and the many beautiful islands of the Seto Inland Sea National Park, Kurashiki is the home to many wonderful natural and cultural treasures. In addition, we also have one of the major industrial complexes in Japan, the Mizushima Coastal Industrial Zone, with its giant conglomerates of steel, automobile and petrochemical factories.

Kurashiki also is aiming to achieve recognition as an international city of arts and culture. Every year, since 1987, we have held the Kurashiki Music Festival to promote music appreciation and music culture throughout our city. Therefore, it is a great honor and privilege for our city to have the opportunity to host such a well-known and world-class music competition.

Our organizational committee is pledging to make this competition truly a festival full of dreams and hopes for all the participants. We know that all of our 430,000 citizens will wholeheartedly welcome all the contestants and make their stay in our city a memorable one. We hope that many young and talented musicians from throughout the world will take advantage of this excellent opportunity to demonstrate their brilliance and technical skill on the world stage. We highly expect that this competition will only be the stepping-stone to greater fame and glory for the eventual winner.
